CHILDREN operate in two communities: Bawana and Shahbad Dairy, located in North Delhi. These areas are focal points for the organization's efforts to enhance the lives of children and youths through education, health initiatives, and empowerment programs.
Bawana– Bawana, a resettlement colony in North Delhi, has served as a relocation area since the early 2000s for people leaving unauthorized slums. It houses a population of approximately 1.5 lakh residents and is situated near the Haryana border, about 23 km northwest of Delhi. Bawana falls under Zone ‘N’ of Delhi's urban extension, with the closest metro station, Rithala, located 14 km away. The main entry point to the Bawana resettlement colony is from the Hanuman Temple side on Narela Road.
Residents of Bawana have been allotted small residential plots by the Delhi Slums Improvement Board (DUSIB). Basic necessities such as access to health services, education, water, and sanitation are crucial needs within the community.
The population of Bawana primarily consists of migrants from states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal. There are also residents who have migrated from Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Haryana, and Nepal.
Economically, the residents are engaged in various occupations including industrial and factory work, daily wage labor, head loading, rickshaw pulling, domestic work, handcart pulling, and rag picking. Some are also employed as drivers of Rural Transport Vehicles (RTV) or E-rickshaws, and as mechanics. Local businesses include street-side eateries known as Dhabas, grocery stores, and small stalls selling various low-value items.
Understanding the diverse demographic and economic landscape of Bawana is crucial for organizations like CHILDREN that aim to support and empower these communities through targeted programs focused on education, health, and socio-economic development.
Shahbad Dairy– Shahbad Dairy is a community in Delhi with a population exceeding one lakh residents, located within the Rohini subdivision of the North-West district. Similar to Bawana, a significant portion of the population in Shahbad Dairy works as industrial workers in both authorized and unauthorized industries. Other major occupations include daily wage laborers, rickshaw pullers, drivers of small vehicles and taxis, and small shop or stall owners.
Originally identified as a slum cluster, Shahbad Dairy houses more than 21,000 families crammed into a six-block area. The colony was established over 25 years ago when residents were evicted from government and private lands in Delhi. The name "Shahbad Dairy" reflects the historical concentration of dairy production in the area.
Due to its distance from the central city, employment opportunities for residents of both Bawana and Shahbad Dairy are limited. These resettlement communities face significant socio-economic challenges, characterized by low incomes and inadequate access to basic amenities.
Understanding the socio-economic context of Shahbad Dairy is essential for organizations like CHILDREN that aim to support these communities through targeted interventions focused on improving living conditions, providing access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities, and fostering overall community development.
